Rising in terraces on the slope of Şahinkaya north of Finike, Arykanda is one of the most dramatically located cities in Lycia. With its theatre, stadium, baths and views over the valley it's a strong route, but it involves a long drive from Olympos, so plan it as a separate day.

A city built in layers up the mountain

The city was laid out in terraces on a steep slope. The stadium sits on the highest terrace; the lower terraces hold the theatre, the odeon and agora, the council house, the Temple of Helios, the bath–gymnasium and tombs. This vertical plan shows how ancient engineers adapted to the terrain and distributed water between the terraces.

Its name is commonly said to mean “the place by the high rock” in Lycian.

Visiting tips

  • The terraces are steep with many steps; wear shoes with good grip. It is difficult for visitors with limited mobility.
  • The road is winding; allow plenty of time for the drive.
  • Start early and you can fit Limyra into the same day.
