Çıralı is one of the official nesting beaches of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta). Every summer female turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, and a few weeks later the hatchlings make their way to the sea. This is not a “close-up photo” activity; this page explains how to watch the turtles without disturbing them and with respect for their habitat.

How to watch

  • During the day, look at the marked nests on the beach from a distance; don't touch the protective cages or markers.
  • If a conservation team is on the beach, listen to them; they have the most accurate information on nesting and hatching.
  • Seeing a turtle is not guaranteed. The goal is not to see the animal but to visit without disturbing its habitat.

Night rules

Hatchlings follow the light on the horizon to reach the sea. A torch, phone light or camera flash on the beach can lead them away from the water. So:

  • Don't use lights or flash on the beach at night.
  • Don't handle hatchlings, carry them to the sea or stand in their way.
  • Don't leave holes in the sand or plant umbrellas or stakes; don't drive onto the beach.
  • Follow the wardens' instructions and seasonal access restrictions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I see hatchlings?

Can I take photos?
Warden instructions and seasonal rules come first. Don't approach the animals, and never use flash at night.
What are my chances of seeing a turtle?
You may see tracks and marked nests, but seeing an adult turtle or hatchlings is not guaranteed.
Can I go on the beach at night?
During the nesting season, access to the beach is restricted at night. Follow the signs and wardens for current hours; see our Çıralı Beach page for details.
