Rock Climbing
Yazır Mahallesi, Kumluca, Antalya
The limestone walls around the Olympos valley make it one of Turkey's best-known sport climbing areas. Most routes are bolted single-pitch lines, and most are no taller than 20 metres. Depending on the source, the area has between 200 and 400 routes; grades run from 3a to 8c, with most routes in the 5b–7c range. Most sectors are within walking distance of Olympos village, the furthest about 20 minutes away.
Sectors
- Cennet: The area's favourite sector. A steep, smooth wall among the trees, overlooking the sea; it calls for thin, technical climbing.
- Hörgüç: Right by the road in the middle of the village. Its routes are overhanging and powerful.
- Other sectors: Several more sectors of different character line the valley. Some are shaded in the morning and others in the afternoon, so you can avoid the sun by switching sectors during the day.
Deep water soloing
On the coast between Olympos and Adrasan, walls 8 to 20 metres high drop straight into the sea. No rope is used here; you fall into deep water. The walls can only be reached by boat, and climbing businesses in the village run guided boat trips in season.
Good to know
- Season: The best period is from mid-September to the end of May. In July and August the walls get too hot to climb, and the start and end of the season can be humid. A sea breeze through the day helps.
- Safety: Some routes have loose rock, so wear a helmet. If you are a beginner, always climb with an experienced local guide.
- Gear: If you bring your own gear, a 60-metre rope and at least 12 quickdraws are recommended. Consumables like chalk and tape can be hard to find locally, so bring them with you.
- Not to be confused with Geyikbayırı: Geyikbayırı, Turkey's largest sport climbing area, is near Antalya city centre, about 1.5 hours' drive from Olympos. Many climbers combine both on the same trip.
- Rest days: On days off, Olympos beach, the ancient city and the Chimaera flames (Yanartaş) are right on your doorstep.
FREQUENTLY ASKED

Do I need climbing experience?
No. The area has easy routes suitable for beginners, and you can climb for the first time with a guide. If you have no experience, don't climb on your own; always go with a guide.
Do I need to bring gear?
On guided climbs the basic gear is usually provided by the guide; confirm in advance. If you climb independently, bring a 60-metre rope and at least 12 quickdraws; consumables like chalk can be hard to find locally.
How many routes are in the area?
Depending on the source, between 200 and 400 routes. Grades run from 3a to 8c, with most routes in the 5b–7c range.
Which months are good for climbing?
From mid-September to the end of May. July and August are very hot, and climbing is hardly possible then.
What is deep water soloing, and where can I do it?
Climbing without a rope on walls directly above the sea, so you fall into deep water. There are 8–20 metre walls on the coast between Olympos and Adrasan, reachable only by boat.
Is Geyikbayırı close to Olympos?
No. Geyikbayırı is near Antalya city centre, about 1.5 hours' drive from Olympos. They are two separate climbing areas.

Not if you're inexperienced. Climb with a local guide or operator who has up-to-date route, bolt and access information.
